Activity: Essential spring work to be undertaken at this site, hopefully accompanied by plentiful bird-song.

Activity: Buddleja clearance at this important city site.

Activity: A repeat of the previous task of buddleja clearance.

MAY 2004

Date: 4th
Place: Meet at Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall layby.
Activity: Water vole survey - Undertaking monitoring of the few water vole sites within the city.

Date: 11th
Place: Bramblefields LNR*/Barnwell East/West (EARLIER START MEET AT 6AM at Bramblefields LNR*)
Activity: Nightingale survey - then on to various sites to look for other breeding species. Earlier than normal finish time.

Activity: Dock clearance and litter collection

Activity: Himalayan Balsam clearance and finishing off the improvements to the kissing gates

JUNE 2004

Date: 1st
Place: Perse Girls School.
Activity: We shall be cutting the regrowth of nettles on part of the reedbed and also controlling dock in the meadow.

Date: 8th
Place: Meet at Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall layby.
Activity: Plant surveys. A trip to various sites around the city looking at species such as Marsh Orchid, Yellow Vetchling, Spreading Hedge-parsley, Adders-tongue Fern and Slender Tare.

Place: Barnwell East LNR*
Activity: Rosebay Willowherb pulling and Michaelmas Daisy cutting.

Date: 22nd
Place: Meet at Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall layby.
Activity: The Great Himalayan Balsam controlling Day. The exact location has yet to be decided but we shall be helping to control this invasive species at various sites along the river.

Place: Barnwell East LNR*
Activity: Same as the task on 15th June.

JULY 2004

Date: 6th
Place: Bramblefields LNR*
Activity: At this important grassland and scrubland site north of the river we shall be limiting the spread of the invasive plants goldenrod and rosebay willowherb.

Date: 13th
Place: Meet at the layby outside Kelsey Kerridge Sports Centre.
Activity: White-letter Hairstreak Butterfly search. This butterfly is only found on elm, a species that has declined severely since the 1970s. However the butterfly is very elusive, staying on the canopy, so it may still be found in elm rich areas within the city. We shall be visiting sites around the city that still have good populations of elm.

Activity: We shall be undertaking the control of the very invasive rosebay willowherb that out competes the grassland found at the site.

Place: Nine Wells*
Activity: We will be clearing back overhanging vegetation from the paths.

AUGUST 2004

Date: 3rd
Place: Fulbourn Road hedge, Cherry Hinton
Activity: The gaps in this hedge were planted up two and a half years ago and our task is to clear back any vegetation that is swamping the hedge plants.

Place: Barnwell East LNR*
Activity: We shall be repeating the task of the 20th of July.

Date: 17th
Place: Perse Girls School Nature Reserve
Activity: The nettles that were cut in June will have re-grown, so need to be re-cut if the reed-bed is to spread.

Date: 24th
Place: Barnwell Junction Meadows
Activity: A new and important site for the group the meadows are owned by the Cambridge Preservation Society and we will be helping to cut and rake the grass.

SEPTEMBER 2004

Date: 7th
Place: Adams Road Sanctuary
Activity: We shall be extending the pond that was dug for Great Crested Newt last year.

Date: 14th
Place: Bramblefields LNR*
Activity: We shall be clearing areas of the grassland on the site, to reduce any ranker vegetation.

Date: 21st
Place: Adams Road Sanctuary
Activity: The completion of the pond is the aim of today.

Date: 28th
Place: Byrons Pool*
Activity: The meadow next to the car park has not been cut for a couple of years so we shall be doing this. Also we shall be clearing some of the vegetation from the ponds.

OCTOBER 2004

Date: 5th
Place: Coldhams Common
Activity: We shall be working on a very interesting area of grassland, which is in need of management. Clearance of invading scrub and cutting and raking off the grass will help the butterflies, bees and other insects in the summer.

Place: Bramblefields LNR*
Activity: We will be preparing the site for the National Big Draw event.

Date: 19th
Place: Adams Road Sanctuary
Activity: The ditch that feeds the lake at this important site needs clearing.

Date: 26th
Place: Barnwell East LNR*
Activity: The group will be tackling the pond, reducing the amount of reedmace to increase the amount of open water. Grass cutting will also be tackled on this day.

NOVEMBER 2004

Date: 2nd
Place: Byrons Pool*
Activity: The old fish ponds need to be partly cleared out to keep them suitable frogs, toads and newts.

Date: 9th
Place: Adams Road Sanctuary
Activity: At this popular site we shall be helping clear the paths and undertake some reed cutting.

Date: 16th
Place: Nine Wells*
Activity: The paths are getting a bit over grown so we shall clearing back any over-hanging vegetation.

Date: 23th
Place: East Pit SSSI
Activity: A much needed trim for an important area of grassland at this important site.

Date: 30th
Place: Bramblefields LNR*
Activity: Litter picking and scrub clearance to help enhance the grassland interest of the site

DECEMBER 2004

Place: Perse Girls School Nature Reserve
Activity: We will be cutting and clearing a section of the reedbed and the marsh. A great opportunity to check out the new bird hide!

* Local Nature Reserve work in the City is funded by English Nature, Cambridge City Council and New Opportunities Fund (Lottery Funded). Tasks on Local Nature Reserves are carried out in partnership with "Friends" Groups established under English Nature's WILDSPACE! Grant Scheme. Ellis Selway, your LNR Community Liaison Officer will jointly lead these days.

The WILDSPACE Scheme has been made possible through funding from the New Opportunities Lottery Fund.

Barnwell East LNR - Meet at the reserve entrance on Uphall Road, off Coldhams Lane.
Barnwell West LNR - Meet at the reserve entrance on Uphall Road, off Coldhams Lane.
Barnwell Junction Meadows - Meet outside the Leper Chapel on Newmarket Road.
Bramblefields LNR - Meet at the end of Pippin Drive off Nuffield Road in Chesterton.
Byron's Pool - Meet in the carpark south of Grantchester Road between Trumpington and Grantchester. From Trumpington the turning is after the village and just before some cottages.
Coldhams Common - Meet at the layby on Barnwell Road opposite Camgas PLC.
East Pit SSSI - Meet at the corner of Queen Ediths Road and Lime Kiln Road.
Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall layby - In front of Parkside Swimming Pool, opposite Parkers Piece.
Mere Way and North Cambridge Triangle - Meet at the corner of Kings Hedges Road and Kirkwood Road.
Nine Wells - Meet at the Shell garage in Trumpington. We shall then drive to the site
Logans Meadow - Meet at the bottom of Logans Way, off off St Andrews Road which is next to Elizabeth Way Bridge.
Perse Girls School reedbed - Meet at the playing field gates on Latham Close off Latham Road off Trumpington Road near Botanic Gardens.
