Previous Wednesday Events - 2005

There is free transport to work sites on a Wednesday. The pick up point is from in front of the waiting room at Babraham Park and Ride off Babraham Road (A1307) at 9:30am. We aim to drop volunteers off again at 4:00pm. This programme will change every three months so please do check it regularly. Sometimes the Programme can change at short notice, please contact the Project Officer on 01954 713530 to confirm details before coming out.

JANUARY

Date: 5th
Place: Roman Road SSSI
Activity: Work off the excesses of the Festive period with helping clear encroaching scrub and brambles from this well known and well loved site.

Date: 12th
Place: Great Wilbraham Pit
Activity: Another visit to this delightful little site, on this visit we shall be concentrating on tree thinning.

Date: 26th
Place: Great Wilbraham Common SSSI
Activity: Another monthly visit to this site to help clear back the scrub, which is encroaching on valuable parts of this important grassland.

FEBRUARY

Date: 2nd
Place: Haslingfield Pit
Activity: We shall be battling back the scrub to help extend the valuable chalk grassland that has been regaining ground for several years now. All this work will help the Man Orchid, which will be counted by the group on the 8th of June.

Place: Great Wilbraham Common SSSI
Activity: The penultimate visit to this site, we shall be building on the work of the last three visits.

Date: 16th
Place: Kingston Old Railway
Activity: Our second visit to this County Wildlife Site, we shall be thinning an area planted with native trees 15 years ago.

Place: Fleam Dyke SSSI
Activity: We shall be working south of Bedford Gap cutting and extending the small pockets of grassland found along the path.

MARCH

Date:2nd
Place: Great Wilbraham Common SSSI
Activity: The final day at this superb site for the scrub clearing season, hopefully a return visit will be made in the summer to see the fruits, or would it be flowers?, of our work.

Place: Fleam Dyke SSSI
Activity: We will be building up to the spring grass cutting by beginning north of the A11.

Date: 23rd
Place: Roman Road SSSI
Activity: Spring is springing so we shall be cutting some of the important areas of the site in preparation for the chalk grassland flowers to emerge.

Date: 30th
Place: Fleam Dyke SSSI
Activity: The group will be clearing the early spring growth of the undesirable species to help the later flowering important chalk grassland species.

APRIL

Place: Fleam Dyke SSSI
Activity: The section north of Mutlow Hill deserves our attention to allow the chalk grassland plants to flourish, so we will be cutting and raking as much as we can.

Place: Roman Road SSSI
Activity: This site also needs a bit of a spring trim, we shall be working south of Worsted Lodge.

Place: Toft Allotment
Activity: This recently discovered site needs an early spring cut to allow the less vigorous plant species to do well.

Place: Stapleford Pit
Activity: A very nice little site also needs our attention with a brush-cutter and some rakes.

MAY

Place: Foxton Horse Meadows/Barrington
Activity: The annual spring visit to this fascinating little site to help reduce the more vigorous species to help the birds-foot trefoil and knapweeds to increase.

Place: East Pit SSSI
Activity: This nationally important site is always in need of some willing volunteers to help clear some buddleja. The results of the previous years clearance are showing very well!

Place: Litlington Pit
Activity: A charming site also needs help keeping the more vigorous species in check.

Place: Heydon Pit
Activity: Nettles abound at this parish chalk pit, but they are declining due to our persistence in cutting them.

JUNE

Date: 1st
Place: Small Blue and Roman Snail Day
Activity: A chance to see this very scarce butterfly in one of the last remaining sites in the county and look for it at another historic site. We shall also be trying to count Roman Snails at Ickleton Pit!

Place: Floral Foray
Activity: We will be heading out to look at all those sites that we have worked on over the winter to see if all that effort was worth it. It will include the annual Man Orchid, will there be more than last year?

Place: Kingston Old Railway
Activity: We shall be delving into the world of many-legged beasts on this day. After the success of Insect Day last year this site was chosen for our investigation for its variety of different habitats.

JULY

Date: 6th
Place: Fen Ditton Recreation Ground Pit
Activity: The group will be spending the day surveying the site and then developing a management plan for this small but intriguing site.

Place: Green Belt Area
Activity: White-letter Hairstreak Butterfly search - This butterfly is only found on elm, a species that has declined severely since the 1970's. However the butterfly is very elusive, staying on the canopy, so it may still be found in elm rich areas within the Green Belt area.

Place: Town End Close, Girton
Activity: This very nice site needs its annual trim so we will be cutting and raking the half of the site that was left last year.

Date: 27th
Place: Devils Dyke SSSI
Activity: We will be making hay while, hopefully, the sun shines. Green hay to be exact to help re-establish chalk grassland on recently cleared areas of this internationally important site.

AUGUST

Date: 3rd
Place: Roman Road SSSI
Activity: We will be attempting to re-enact last weeks green hay task in areas of the Road that were cleared last year.

Place: Great Wilbraham Common SSSI
Activity: A well deserved visit to this site that the group completed a lot of work over the winter. We shall be monitoring the success of the work and maybe do some invasive species control.

Place: Roman Road SSSI
Activity: The grass-cutting season continues apace and parts of this site deserve a trim.

Place: Great Wilbraham Pit
Activity: This special little site needs to have part of its chalk grassland area cut and cleared.

SEPTEMBER

Date: 7th
Place: Roman Road SSSI
Activity: To get on top of the rapid growth of the scrub regrowth the group will be working on several different areas of this site to help encourage the grassland.

Date: 14th
Place: Kingston Disused Railway Local Nature Reserve
Activity: We shall be cutting and clearing half of the grassland area of this delightful little site.

Date: 21st
Place: Haslingfield Pit County Wildlife Site
Activity: The groups regular visit to this very special site, where, unfortunately, the numbers of Man Orchid were less than a tenth of the numbers last year. However we will continue the cutting and raking of the central area of grassland and start clearing other areas where the grassland could potentially spread.

Place: Fleam Dyke SSSI
Activity: As it is a large site we shall again be spending this clearing scrub growth and reducing the thicker, coarser grasses to encourage the finer species of the chalk grassland.

OCTOBER

Date: 5th
Place: Dry Drayton
Activity: The group will be clearing encroaching vegetation from a pond that contains the largest Great Crested Newt population in the Cambridge Green Belt.

Place: Haslingfield Pit
Activity: After a disappointing show of Man Orchids this year we shall be endeavouring to improve the situation for next year by cutting and clearing the main growing area. Limited scrub clearance will also take place.

Place: Fungal Foray
Activity: Due to popular request the group will be visiting a secret location to take part in a fungal foray. This will, of course, be after a morning of brash and scrub clearance.

Activity: Another visit to this impressive site to continue to remove scrub from the extensive chalk grassland found on the site.

NOVEMBER

Date: 2nd
Place: Gog Magog Golf Course
Activity: After another population of Moon Carrot was found over the summer the group will be undertaking emergency fencing and scrub clearance work to help bolster this population.

Date: 9th
Place: Fleam Dyke SSSI
Activity: With a lot of the encroaching scrub cleared, grass cutting is the main task for the group at this site.

Date: 16th
Place: Roman Road SSSI
Activity: To keep the scrub and coarser grasses at bay the group will be cutting and clearing extensive areas of this very important grassland site.

Activity: As Christmas comes round so the annual Christmas work party takes place at Great Wilbraham Common. Mainly scrub clearance work with a liberal sprinkling of mince pies and jacket potatoes
